Our Lady’s Message: Mediatrix of Graces (204)




 

Dear brothers and sisters,

This Sunday, Jesus talks about “dwelling places in the Father’s house” (Jn. 14:2). He means here the kind of life that he brings in the light of his Resurrection: the “life of grace.” It is like residing in the Father’s house, because he and the Father dwell and work in us, enabling us to “do the works that I do, and will do greater than these” (Jn. 14: 12). In her message, Our Lady explains the “life of grace,” of which she is the Mediatrix. We will read Message 204: “Mediatrix of Graces” from the book “To the Priests Our Lady’s Beloved Sons.”



 

I. GOSPEL READING (John 14: 1-12)


 

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way.” Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.”




 

Points for Reflection



 

1. “In my Father’s house, there are many dwelling places.”


 

Heaven comes easily to mind with this statement. But, this is not what Jesus is referring to. His concern is rather on the here-and-now as we see him comforting his disciples about his impending death: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” He exhorts them to “have faith” in the Father and in him, because, after his death, both of them will dwell and work in them. It will be a special kind of life, like residing in the Father’s house; amazingly, “ heaven on earth!”


This, of course, is the “life of grace” that the Church Catechism teaches us. Having redeemed us by his death and resurrection, Jesus restores in us the divine life that was suspended after the Fall. With the restoration of the “life of grace,” Jesus even assures us that, whoever believes in him will do the works that he did, and will do greater ones than these (Jn. 14: 12).



 

2. The Life of Grace Among the Believers


 

The phenomenal expansion of the young church in Jerusalem proves this promise to be true. The First Reading (Acts 6:1-7) narrates: “the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly.” This, in fact, is the wonder of the Church. The Gospel spread throughout the world through the apostles despite human limitations.


 

Peter helps us understand how “greater works” happen. In the Second Reading (1 Pt. 2:4-9), he tells us that Jesus is the “living stone” of God’s New Temple (i.e., a Person, not a building). By virtue of the “life of grace” that we received through baptism, we, too, are “living stones” in this New Temple. All the baptized participate with him in his work of redemption. His saving works are not confined to thirty-three years in Palestine. Even in our very ordinary lives, he continues that work with us and through us throughout the world.




 

II. OUR LADY’S MESSAGE: "Mediatrix of Graces” (Message 204)



 

July 16, 1980

Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel



 

a. Beloved children, I am the Mediatrix of Graces. Grace is the very life of God, which is communicated to you. It springs from the bosom of the Father and is merited for you by the Word who, in my virginal womb, became man to share with you that same divine life, and for this He offered Himself as a ransom for you, becoming thus the one and only Mediator between God and all humanity.


 

b. From the bosom of the Father, grace, in order to reach you, must therefore pass through the divine Heart of the Son, who communicates it to you in his Spirit of Love. Just as a ray of light, which passes through a window, assumes its shape, color and design, so too divine grace, merited by Jesus, can come to you only through Him, and it is for this reason that it reproduces in you his own image, the very same image which shapes you ever more and more to his own person.


 

c. Divine life can reach you only in the form of Jesus, and the more this increases in you, the more you are assimilated to Him, in such a way that you can really grow as his little brothers.


 

d. By means of grace, the Father communicates Himself to you ever more and more, the Son assimilates you, the Holy Spirit transforms you, bringing about a relationship of life with the Most Holy Trinity, which becomes ever increasingly strong and active. Within souls who are in grace, it is the Most Holy Trinity Itself which takes up its dwelling place there.


 

e. This life of grace has also a relationship with your heavenly Mother.



f. As I am truly the Mother of Jesus and your Mother, my mediation is exercised between you and my Son Jesus. This is the natural consequence of my divine motherhood.


 

g. As the Mother of Jesus, I am the means chosen by God by which my Son can reach you. In my virginal womb this first act of mediation of mine is carried out.


 

h. As your Mother, I was the means chosen by Jesus that through me all of you may reach Him.


 

i. I am truly the Mediatrix of Grace between you and my Son Jesus. My task is that of distributing to my little children that grace which flows out from the bosom of the Father, is merited for you by the Son and is given to you by the Holy Spirit.


 

j. My task is that of distributing it to all my children, according to the particular needs of each one, which the Mother is very good at knowing.


 

k. I am ever carrying out this duty of mine. However I can carry it out fully only in the case of those children who entrust themselves to me with perfect abandonment. I am above all able to carry it out in respect to you, my favorite sons who, by your consecration, have entrusted yourselves completely to me.


 

l. I am the way, which leads you to Jesus. I am the safest and shortest way, the necessary way for each one of you. If you refuse to go along this way, you run the danger of being lost in the course of your journey.


 

m. Today many have wished to put me aside, considering me an obstacle in reaching Jesus, because they have not understood my function as Mediatrix between you and my Son.


 

n. And so, never before as in these present times, are so many of my children running the risk of not being able to reach Him. The Jesus whom they meet is often only the result of their human research, and corresponds to their aspirations and desires; he is a Jesus formed according to their measure: he is not Jesus, the Christ, the true Son of God and of your immaculate Mother.


 

o. Entrust yourselves to me with confidence, and you will remain faithful, because I will be able to carry out fully my work as Mediatrix of Graces. I will take you each day along the way of my Son, in such a way that He may increase in you to his fullness.


 

p. This is my great work, which I am still carrying out in silence and in the desert. Under my powerful action as Mediatrix of Graces, you are ever more transformed into Christ, that you may become fit for the task which awaits you. Forward then, with courage, along the way traced out by your heavenly Mother . . .




 

Points for Reflection



 

1. Life of Grace


 

“Life of grace” is basically “the very life of God.” The Father communicates this life to us through Jesus, who became man and died for us precisely to bring back this “life of grace” to us (204 a). This is transmitted through Jesus and “only” in his form. Just as a ray of light, which passes through a window, assumes its shape, color and design, so too divine grace comes to us only through him. For this reason, it reproduces in us his own image, the very same image that forms us into his own person. The more this increases in us, the more we are assimilated to his likeness, in such a way that we can really grow to be like him (204 b-c).


 

Our Lady’s explanation of the “life of grace” makes clearer the “dwelling places,” which Jesus mentioned in the Gospel (Jn. 14:2). By means of grace, the Father communicates Himself to us, the Son assimilates us, and the Holy Spirit transforms us, bringing about a relationship of life with the Most Holy Trinity. “Within souls who are in grace, it is the Most Holy Trinity Itself which takes up its dwelling place there” (204 d).



 

 

2. Mediatrix of Grace



This “life of grace” is related to her role as “mediatrix of grace” (204 e). To be clear, this role is between Jesus and us, and, thus, distinct from Jesus’ role as our one Mediator to the Father. We look at this role in the light of her motherhood, both to Jesus and to us (204 f). Just as God chose her as the means by which Jesus can reach us, so also did Jesus choose her as the means by which we may reach him (204 g-h). With this role, she is tasked to distribute divine grace to us according to our particular needs (204 i-j). She can fully do this, however, “only through our consecration to her Immaculate Heart” and “in perfect abandonment” (204 k).


 

Regrettably, many, even well meaning Christians, still consider her as an obstacle to reaching Jesus. We often hear this remark: “Why pass through her, when we can go direct to him?” Our Lady’s answer is clear-cut: “They do not understand my function as Mediatrix between you and my Son.” Thus, many are running the risk of not being able to reach Jesus. The Jesus whom they meet is Jesus formed according to their measure. He is not Jesus, the Christ, the true Son of God and of Our Lady (204 m-n).



 

3. Her Call for Consecration


 

Our Lady is resolute about her role as our “mediatrix” to Jesus. She is our way to him, the safest and shortest way, and the necessary way. Refusal to go along her way runs the risk of us being lost in the course of our journey (204 l). Thus, she reiterates her call to entrust ourselves to her with confidence. “You will remain faithful, because I will be able to carry out fully my work as Mediatrix of Graces. I will take you each day along the way of my Son, in such a way that He may increase in you to his fullness” (204 o). This is her great work as “Mediatrix of Graces.” She urges us to move forward with courage along the way she traced out for us (204 o-p).
